Then you’re just sane-washing Trump’s veiled threats by saying he doesn’t really mean it - or that he’s just lying.
It's not sane-washing. We know he was lying - these quotes are from months and months ago, and he didn't do any of those things.
When he uses hyperbole to say that we're going to destroy the Iranians, he's not coyly suggesting that he's about to launch a ground invasion. Or call in a nuclear strike. We should take the threat seriously, in that when he does that he's clearly signaling more bellicose aggression. But that doesn't mean we need to assume that something that is utterly outlandish (like a ground invasion or a nuclear strike) is suddenly no longer outlandish just because Trump made an empty threat.
