Leon and Willie, in their prime, liked to play just down the road from my Dana Point home at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, an intimate venue where an extra $20 would get you seated at a table next to Trigger or Leons piano. 2 drink minimumLeon eventually returned to Oklahoma and could be seen in a few bars and venues, including Cain’s in the near northside (Greenwood) area of Tulsa. In 1970. I walked into a bar on 51st Street (Pickles) and a few tables over- there was Leon and George Harrison. An old girlfriend of mine talked about playing pool with him. I never did see him with Joe Cocker, though that was about the time of “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”
Eventually, he bought a place up on Grand Lake, east of Tulsa, and converted part of the house into a high end studio. That was probably 80s-90s… somewhere in there..
The mid sixties Tulsa that SE Hinton writes about in “The Outsiders” really was like she described, but if truth be known, it was probably a good description of alot of places back then.
