Third option- do the trip old style like we used to before cell or mobile phones- get trip maps from AAA and tell everyone that we’ll be out of the country and unreachable for the duration.
We’re leaning toward option #3, while acknowledging that we’ll be without GPS. The issue of family being able to get ahold of us in an emergency can be handled the old style way- give them the telephone numbers of the places we’ll be staying. Also, we’ll download and print our tickets to the plays we’ll see in Stratford,ON, as well as the hotels/B&Bs in Stratford and Niagra-on-the-Lake.
That all depends on how you like to travel. We just got back from Japan, and the phone was indispensable. Constantly using it to find things that might be near us: where is the nearest convenience store, the nearest "X" type of restaurant, texting/calling each other when we separated, looking up information about the things we're looking at, etc. The convenience of having every phone number, every ticket, our full itinerary and calendar, all our needed information with us all the time. To say nothing of having it in case of emergency, to call for roadside assistance, or what have you. I can't imagine choosing not to have access to all those services while travelling.
