Afghanistan was their Vietnam.

True. But this one is similar. They invade a sovereign nation, failed to take it over, and then end up in an attrition slog for years where you gain little, and lose lives, treasure, and resources.

I guess you could sorta liken it to Barbarossa, where Germany failed to take Moscow in the first few months, and then (in that case) winter set in, and Germany never came close again. It became a meat grinder with no realistic way to win.
