As a little bit of a follow up, what made the deal happen for The Onion is that the Sandy Hook families (who are owed about 97% of Jones' debts) agreed to take a smaller cut of the proceeds and give that to Texas families (who were similarly defamed but had a much smaller judgement) if The Onion won the bid. The only other real bidder was some rather anonymous organization that would have let Jones stay on the air. Their bid was somewhat higher, but the agreement by the Sandy Hook families made the Onion's bid better for more of the creditors.
