The guy who owes over a billion dollars to the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims because of his decade of lies about the event? And his Infowars web site and brand name?

Not surprisingly, Jones is now in bankruptcy and his assets are being sold off to pay his debts. And that includes Infowars. There were some friendly bidders for that, who would have let Jones continue to make his offensive material. But the winner was the satire web site The Onion.

Sounds like an article they would write, but it's real. Everyone from Fox to MSNBC is reporting the same thing. Here's a link to CNN's coverage, but feel free to substitute your own search for the news.

What I haven't figured out is what The Onion plans to do with it.

Whatever The Onion does with it, we can bet it will be genius.

I saw that on NPR this morning. According to the NYT, they plan to make it a parody of itself.

The satirical news site planned to turn Infowars into a parody of itself, mocking “weird internet personalities” who peddle conspiracy theories and health supplements.

As a little bit of a follow up, what made the deal happen for The Onion is that the Sandy Hook families (who are owed about 97% of Jones' debts) agreed to take a smaller cut of the proceeds and give that to Texas families (who were similarly defamed but had a much smaller judgement) if The Onion won the bid. The only other real bidder was some rather anonymous organization that would have let Jones stay on the air. Their bid was somewhat higher, but the agreement by the Sandy Hook families made the Onion's bid better for more of the creditors.

Here's a long-ish video (20+ minutes) from Legal Eagle with the gory details.
