Forty-one percent of Americans now say they sympathize more with the Palestinians in the Middle East situation, while 36% sympathize more with the Israelis. The five-percentage-point difference is not statistically significant, but it contrasts with a clear lead for the Israelis only a year ago (46% vs. 33%) and larger leads over the prior 24 years.
Speaking only for myself, I sympathize with the civilians on both sides that are being killed. Presently, it's a genocide of Palestinians. But we can't ignore the decades of attacks on Israeli buses and pizza parlors and unguided rockets crashing into their cities. I blame Hamas, and Hezbollah, and the Israeli government (especially for their apartheid setup they had prior to the Hamas attack that started this latest round). They're all to blame, and I feel for the guy that's just trying to open his shop, or go to work somewhere, just to feed his family.
How do you capture that in a facile survey?
