The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

If "we the people" don't elect a new Congress in November - both House and Senate - that will act on their constitutional duties to serve as a check and balance on this idiot - then we deserve the consequences. There are no excuses. The evidence is both clear and overwhelming.

When I realized that Trump might once again become President - because of how the Democrats struggled and waited too late to form a realistic alternate - I did the only thing in my power to do. I tried to position my wife and I to ride out whatever might come to pass - as best we could. And warned my extended family and friends FWIW. Similar mistake Demos made before the first election - but different in that Hillary was widely hated and Trump relatively unknown. The latter was just a screwup in changing horse and messages.

So I sold Berkshire in my IRA to raise enough cash to carry us to the end of our days. Those cash balance in the IRA to cover RMDs, plus SSI, and dividends from XOM and JNJ, are more than enough to cover our remaining lifetimes even with inflation. And protect having to sell any equities outside the IRA so that they would pass on to the heirs, hopefully still with the step-up basis. XOM has raised dividends for 43 years, even through Covid. JNJ even longer. If these fail, so will our economy. If so, I've already learned how to live through hard times in the Depression and post era. We'll be OK.

I hope everyone else has such a Plan B. Ours exist because we started early to never outlive our means. Keeps us sane as conditions continue to worsen.
