Yeah, that was a great movie. Under-recognized, IMO. I also read the book (still have it here somewhere on one of my shelves). It seems to be realistic to what can occur prior to The Terminator (Skynet). Colossus wanted to control people, where Skynet wanted to wipe us out. Both are believable, given a true sentient AI. Especially if you're silly enough to give it control of the world's nukes. Which, I predict, is exactly what some fool will do in 50 years.
Star Trek addressed this general issue at least twice ("I Mudd" and "The Ultimate Computer"). I could probably come up with more if I thought about it for a few minutes.
