Gen X is going to fix this country's fiscal problems because you and I are going to be bent over the table and on the receiving end of austerity. Social Security and Medicare cuts, big ones. All because Boomers couldn't save and couldn't govern their way out of a wet paper bag.
I think that's unlikely. It's far more likely that Gen X would fix this country's fiscal problems with tax increases and cuts to things other than Social Security and Medicare cuts. Those are two of the most popular things the federal government does. They're the least likely things for the government to materially change.
Because this isn't because Boomers couldn't save or govern. It's because Republicans allowed the Arthur Laffers and Grover Norquists of the world to convince them that if you slash taxes by a lot, then either we'd see increases in government revenue (due to the power of growth!) or we'd see reductions in government spending (due to the power of shrinking government and bathtubs!). In the real world, neither happened. We had the Bush Tax Cuts and the Trump Tax Cuts/OBBBA, and now we're in a hole. Which we (different "we" than your "we") have been warning of this for two decades, and they just laughed.
If you repealed both the Bush Tax Cuts and the OBBBA, federal revenue would get close to 21% of GDP - which would all-but-eliminate the deficit. I don't think that's likely, because not paying taxes is popular. But it's far more likely than big whacking cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
