If some burglar breaks into your house and you feel like you’re life is in danger, you are well within the law to take whatever steps you deem necessary as you have no duty to retreat in that case.

Most states now use the castle doctrine or stand your ground, so there's no duty to retreat inside the home, some have a reasonable force requirement, but Massachusetts still has an enforced duty to retreat.
