The Senate on Thursday rebuked President Donald Trump's global tariffs, narrowly passing a resolution that terminates the national emergency declared by the president to impose levies on more than 180 countries.

Four Republican senators voted with all Democrats for the measure: Co-sponsor Rand Paul of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine; Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

The Senate earlier this week passed similar referendums targeting Trump's tariffs on Canada and Brazil, specifically.

narrowly passing

Meaning it can be vetoed, if it's intended to be law, or ignored if it is only a "sense of the Senate" sort of thing.

The Senate needs to stop wasting time with this sort of purely performative but otherwise meaningless waste of the taxpayers' money.

So what does this really accomplish? I mean it's good that a few GOP Senators
finally grew a pair and publicly rebuked Trump with a vote. But it would
just remove the National Emergency Declaration declared by Trump, and it would have to go to the House for approval. And I think it said that Trump ( or whomever is actually making the decisions in the WH, probably Russel Vought, sure isn't the brain addled Trump ) could veto it if it did make it thru the House. So not sure what this does ?

In terms of School House Rock, this bill will never become law. It is likely never to even get assigned to a committee in the House.

That doesn't mean it is pointless. It will be talked about and people who are blaming the MAGApublicans will turn on them in greater numbers.

Three-quarters of Americans say they are concerned about the government shutdown, up from two-thirds who said the same on the first day of the shutdown in a Washington Post poll. Now, 43% of Americans say that they are "very" concerned about the shutdown, up from 25% on Oct. 1.

Nearly half of Americans, 45%, say Trump and congressional Republicans are responsible for the shutdown, while 33% say congressional Democrats are responsible and another 22% are not sure. That is barely a shift from the Post’s poll on Oct. 1 when 47% blamed Trump and Republicans, 30% blamed Democrats and 23% were unsure at the onset of the shutdown.

Democrats are more united, saying that Trump and Republicans are to blame for the shutdown (81%) than Republicans saying Democrats are to blame (72%). Twice as many independents say Trump and Republicans are responsible (46%) than Democrats (23%).

I think it is probably that last sentence that is giving Senators and Republicans in more purple or only pink districts pause.
