That is a false characterization of Zionism. At its founding, and at the founding of the state of Israel, and for the first 50 years of Israel’s existence, Zionism sought to establish a state which Jewish people could call their home, while it guaranteed equal rights to all its citizens. Israel’s Declaration of Independence was practically plagiarized from America’s because it espoused the same ideas, never quite accomplished in either case. The fact that Israel, and Zionism, have been hijacked by religious extremists, should not condemn the original Zionist idea.
Those are the ideals that motivated the founding of our two countries, and I look forward to both of us returning to the task of perfecting our respective efforts toward equality under the law.
