As for taxpayer dollars, one of the main reasons the US has maintained military support for Israel is to provide a counter against Soviet, and later Iranian, hegemony in the area. That remains.
Why? What business does the US still have in the Middle East? It’s not the 1970s any more. The US now exports more oil than it imports.
And we’re still maintaining civil relations with the Saudis, who seem mostly willing to sell us oil.
They don’t have the best human rights record, but at least they mostly stick to their own borders. Well, the Arabian peninsula. Mostly. Sort of. Ok, let’s just say that aren’t as universally hated as Israel is. If we need an ally in the region, why not them instead?
I guess my point is that Israel isn’t our only friend in the region.
