For one, the alliance was here before Trump and it'll be here after Trump. So since marriages are theoretically lifetime contracts, your allegory doesn't hold up.

For two, the media hyped the rhetorical nonsense and spread fear. Meanwhile, the adults were hammering out a mutually beneficial deal because that's what adults do. I'll note that many European politicians failed to be diplomats in this whole thing also. You see this play out up in Canada as well where it seems a bunch of petulant children are in charge.

For three, the reflexive If Trump Wants It Then It Means This Thing Will Destroy The Planet is beyond stupid. The Danes and Greenlanders should want what we're planning on putting in Greenland: it after all provides them a ton more security and capability at zero cost to them.
