Here's what I get as an estimate of the return of Berkshire's equity portfolio in 2022 using the formula
total return = ((ending balance - beginning balance - purchase of equity securities + sale of equity securities)/beginning balance) + dividend yield
For 2022 the numbers were:
ending balance $308,793 million
beginning balance $350,719 million
purchase of equity securities $67,930 million
Sale of equity securities $33,644 million
estimated dividend yield 1.57%
However this year on Aug 4 Occidental stock was transferred from the equity portfolio to the equity method without a corresponding "sale of equity securities," so I added that amount, 118.4 million shares at $57.23/share on Aug 4, to the proceeds from sale of equity securities.
The resulting, estimated total return for 2022 was -17.1%, pulled down heavily by the 27% decline in the price of Apple stock and the 26% decline in BAC stock. The total return of the S&P 500 in 2022 was -18.1%. I hope I did my arithmetic right.
