...and then what? I mean, there isn't much to say about an invisible man in the sky. And I don't suppose we can talk about our favorite gods either. So, serious question: what do you used to talk about on the Motley Fool atheist board?

about on the Motley Fool atheist board?

In one word, companionship. In more words, expression of literature, mythology, chaos, art and aesthetic observation that are absent and desperately sought, in a world where, for many, God had died.

and then what? I mean, there isn't much to say about an invisible man in the sky. And I don't suppose we can talk about our favorite gods either. So, serious question: what do you used to talk about on the Motley Fool atheist board?

The board started many years ago discussing mostly invisible man in the sky stuff, it was led by a guy from Austin who ran an atheist group in Austin (I think.)

Over time it expanded into include 'light' politics, including but not limited those things at the intersection of atheism and politics, as when a city council voted on distributing Bibles in classrooms, or people voted to make 'In God We Trust' their town motto, and so forth. It grew to include other 'light' politics as can be found affecting the issues of atheism/religion, and as the Republican Party became more and more a wholly owned subsidiary of the evangelical movement the board evolved into more political talk.

It was a good place to come where intelligent, science based questions could be asked and answered without the flame wars that erupted on the Political Asylum board, and while the Flying Spaghetti Monster was a constant presence, the board evolved beyond just atheism.

For instance, you could ask about the obvious dichotomy between Jesus (so called) teachings and how the Red states handled the poor, disenfranchised, and hungry. Or heck, you didn't even have to bring Jesus into the discussion (some might have even hijacked a thread asking if there was ever such a person).

Anyway, it was mostly Liberal Lite, but there were also dedicated Conservatives who played, and the board was mostly tolerant, well attended, and enjoyable. Have at it. It's always good to have new blood. Not to drink, of course, we save that for the atheist rituals on Solstice days :)

It would be nice if we could re-capture some of that community. We'll see - it's much easier to break a thing than fix it. I don't do FB, so I don't know how much of the old AF group landed on the refugees page, so I don't even know whether many of the old TMF'ers even know about the incredible re-creation Manlobbi has put together....

Thank you. I want to express something rather urgent.

It is very easy to make the mistake of taking the platform for granted now that it exists 'technically' and that *you* can see it, and then assume others can see it.

The truth is, I have no marketing budget, and we (the community) are relying 100% on ourselves here to tell everyone we knew even mildly connected to this culture, where this site is (www.shrewdom.com).

I have expressed this a few times but to my surprise, the majority of the links even from discussion.fool.com to this site are still my own, despite a few posts on the Berkshire board encouraging people to inform their colleagues and companions.

Please try to remember anyone connected to this community that you personally corresponded with, even ten years ago, and if you can search for their email in your email history, or you have their number, let them know the url to this site. They will likely have *no* other way of reconnecting with you, since there is no promotional process other than from the community itself.

In good faith for preserving culture!
