The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

The debates about when to start SS usually implicitly presume that they have a lot of money.
- It doesn't make sense to start SS while you are under FRA and still working.
- You have to have a portfolio big enough that you can live off of it and don't need SS money.

In the example of my friends upthread, they are both still working, part-time.
They do have a big enough portfolio - at least 25x expenses without the part-time gigs.
I don't know how much is taxable vs tax-deferred.
They don't need the SS income. They live very nicely without it.

Main reasons to delay, I think, are lower taxes now, and to help mitigate sequence of returns risk.

In a few years Mrs. C. and I will be in this similar position. Without the part-time working.
