I’m Conservative. My Disabled Son Needs Medicaid to Survive (Gifted)
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/21/opinion/medicai...

Not said, but it's obvious, she is also a fundamentalist Christian.

I remember when Dawkins got into trouble for advising a pregnant woman, carrying an unhealthy fetus, to abort and try again. Seemed sensible to me.

We celebrated his fourth birthday in July. I do not understand the course of his life; I am simply grateful. David does not walk, talk or eat independently. He is visually impaired and has hearing loss. He has an unrepaired cleft palate open to protruding brain tissue, covered by a thin layer of mucous membrane. Developmentally, David is like a 10-month-old baby. He is our joy, and it is our privilege to parent him.

Poor kid. At least the parent gets joy from it...

A conservative who is leaving the state with a problem. Unless the child pre-deceases the parents, it will become a ward of the state one day.

I commend them for their commitment to their son. But this is an instance when an abortion probably would have been a good idea. Not that I would ever mandate such a thing. But the child has no quality of life (though, probably, isn't aware of it, either), and the parents' quality of life is severely impacted (though, it was their choice). It has to be heartbreaking. A tragic situation all around.

Tragic indeed. What about her other kids? No one is getting a better life in this situation.

She's a "proud conservative" who expects the taxpayer to pay her a living wage to care for her own child. Does seem a bit wacky.

I keep wondering - what is a "conservative"? Does it just mean a supporter of the Republican party?

Government handouts are immoral. As able adults, the parents should make sure they can support their kid. Otherwise, according to Republicans, they are too lazy and irresponsible. So what is the problem?
