Markel is a good buy today in my opinion.

Based on their earnings, BRK too may report an earnings loss due to unrealized equity portfolio losses. And there will surely be some commentary on Abel’s poor management.
MKL is now probably trading at a price to current book of around 1.15.
Hopefully Abel and Jain are taking a close look at it.

They will be fine since the larger positions are doing well.

Dealraker - completely agree. Doubled my position today. Have been wanting to own more for years but always felt like there wasn’t enough margin of safety. But the decrease YTD and today’s downdraft felt like an unusual opportunity.

Jana Partners calling again for Markel to sell of Ventures, focus on insurance and do a major buyback.
I won’t be surprised if calls for Berkshire to do the same will grow, esp. if mediocre performance of operating businesses continue and cash pile grows. Abel is likely to have a very short honeymoon.

Yeah I really doubt any activist is going to push Berkshire around.

I don't know why I'm really posting on this, so maybe I'm really just expression frustration.
Re Jana Partners, I asked AI for some insights. They have about $2.2 billion in assets, of which just under $2 billion is invested - mostly in 10 stocks.
Markel represents 9% of those investments.
Markel has a $22.2 billion market cap when I looked earlier today. At best. Jana Partners is a 1% shareholder. And a well know activist investor. Looking after themselves trying to make a quick buck.
Why the hell would I pay any attention to them? Does a 1% tail control the dog's actions these days?
I'm not skilled in these matters. But I'd tell them to kiss my ass and shut up. I'll listen when more of my shareholders command attention.
Maybe I'm in a mood today. I usually avoid these topics. Why am I even commenting? I guess I'm getting tired of people like Jana telling people what to to - in their interests, not necessarily the shareholders.
If more would join in, then maybe I'd listen. Like if something really significant came up at this weekend's BRk shareholder meeting. But it would have to come from shareholders with more than a 1% interest. I'll be watching to see.
