The granddaughter of John F. Kennedy has died following a battle with acute myeloid leukemia. She was a new mother and only 35 years old. She wrote of her diagnosis and treatments in a beautifully written and devastating essay, "The Battle with My Blood," published in The New Yorker just before Thanksgiving.

Schlossberg, a fitness buff, was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia -- with a rare mutation called Inversion 3 -- during routine blood work after giving birth to her daughter, her second child, on May 25, 2024.

I care for several reasons.

First, I care because I was diagnosed with an incurable stage 4 cancer myself one year ago this past Christmas. I was hoping to read her success story in "A Battle with My Blood" -- after all, she had access to the finest doctors and medical care in America. Many of us see ourselves in other cancer victims and find hope when others respond well to treatment. While her cancer was incurable, she hoped it could be managed.

I care because of my interest in her treatment. Many of us cancer patients are curious to see if someone else's battle parallels our own.

I care because, like Schlossberg, I too am a parent concerned with what I might leave in my absence. She was mother to a 3 year old son and an 18 month old daughter.

I care because Schlossberg was a young woman suffering both from her cancer and from her cancer treatment. My treatment is a walk in the park compared with what she went through.

I care because her essay was beautifully written, at turns tragic, insightful, revelatory, fascinating, and, here and there, even amusing.

I care because she cared deeply and worked to make the Earth a better place for all of us.

And finally, I care because how could I not care? Unlike some, I am not a monster. I care about people, even people I have never met.

If people would stop responding to pustules, I would have fewer threads to ignore.

Assuming you're not a Russian bot, I actually care about you too. You seem extremely angry. You make up stories about how you "know" we care or don't care about others, which enflames your anger. You see only the warped image in the fun-house mirror of your mind. You don't truly know us or what we think or feel.

I hope there is some good in you that will be freed to emerge someday. I hope you will get some help so that you will be able to feel happiness again. Not rage-backed glee at some "victory" about a perceived injustice, but pure, simple, peaceful happiness.
