Curious how people on this board have played the regional bank fallout post SVB. I ended up purchasing shares in HBAN, KEY and SCWB as things went south. HBAN now show dividend yields of about 8% while Schwab seemed to me to be at no risk of corporate failure. HBAN is probably in more risk of suffering in a recession rather than suffering due to deposit runs, but they have still been hit very hard. I did not take any positions in SVB, FRB, PacWest, or Western Alliance during this period.

Both of those have shown up on my screens multiple times as well. I ended up staying away from East West because of his concentration of customers on the west coast and possible impact of east - west relations on its customer base. Fifth Third I should probably have taken a closer look at.

I built a basket of banks, large and small, U.S. and ex-. Many caveats: I'm not a bank analyst. My review of their balance sheets was pretty cursory, mostly looking for real bad stuff hiding in plain sight. These are all small positions and not equally sized. Some could be a lot more exciting (in a bad way) than others. I think a smart person willing to spend some time could probably do better.

I decided to add EWBC after doing a small bit of research. So that is now a good chunky position I have in 3 regional banks + Schwab.

Li Lu probably is familiar with EWBC and may even have a banking relationship with them.

It is one of a few U.S. based banks with a full banking license in China. It serves the ethnic Chinese community in USA and facilitates cross border finances.

EWBC has an amazing efficiency ratio of 37%, ROA of 1.8, ROE 20%, and mid-teens growth rate. Has been clobbered along with the rest of the regional banks. It is now trading at a PE of below 6, half its 5-year average.
