Trump agrees to 2-week ceasefire deal with Iran after threatening to wipe out its 'whole civilization.' How we got here, and what could happen next.

“The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump wrote. “We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”

Iran’s foreign minister confirmed in a statement that the Iranians would “cease their defensive operation” and that “for a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible.”

Israel, who is not happy with the peace agreement says it doesn't apply to them when it relates to Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran and Pakistan say that it does. I wonder if Israel is going to go out of its way to trash whatever deal has been made.

Trump asserted that Iran had agreed to keep the Strait of Hormuz open during the two-week pause in hostilities. Negotiations, he added, will proceed over that period on the basis of Iran’s 10-point plan, which he described as a “workable” foundation for talks.

The United States has not, of course, signed on to all ten points. But the mere fact that Iran’s framework will anchor the negotiations amounts to a significant diplomatic victory for Tehran. More striking still, according to the Associated Press, Iran will retain control of the Strait during the ceasefire and continue — alongside Oman — to collect transit fees from passing vessels. In effect, Washington appears to have conceded that reopening the waterway comes with tacit recognition of Iran’s authority over it.

HM. What happened to the president's March 6 demand for Iran's unconditional surrender?

The notion that air power alone can decapitate its leadership, destroy its infrastructure, and produce regime change represents a fantasy that scholars have debunked repeatedly over the past century. Yet here we are, over a month into Operation Epic Fury, watching Washington learn these lessons the hard way.

None of this should surprise anyone who has studied the actual historical record on air power and coercion. Robert Pape, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago who also taught at the U.S. Air Force’s School of Advanced Airpower Studies and authored Bombing to Win: Air Power and Coercion in War, has analyzed over a century of air power history. His conclusion is unambiguous.

“I’ve studied every air campaign since World War I, and in all that time, over 100 years, air power alone—without ground forces—has never toppled a regime,” Pape told MS Now. “There have been times when there have been pro-democracy movements in combination with the air power; it has never worked. It has not worked in the dumb-bomb age, the smart-bomb age. We’ve tried so many different combinations, so much intelligence, and it has never worked.”

There has been a few general firings recently. I wonder if those generals brought up the fact that Iranian air attacks would not bring the desired result?

“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”

The next sentence was also illumnating: "Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran."

And the 10 point plan:

1- The US should commit, in principle, to guarantee non-aggression

2- Iran’s continued control of the Strait of Hormuz

3- Iran’s uranium enrichment right should be accepted

4- Lifting of all primary sanctions

5- Lifting of all secondary sanctions

6- Termination of all UN Security Council resolutions

7- Termination of all IAEA Board of Governors resolutions

8- Payment of compensation for damages inflicted on Iran

9- Withdrawal of US combat forces from the region

10- Cessation of the war on all fronts, including against the heroic Islamic resistance in Lebanon

___________

I'll say that acceptance of Iran's plan is total victory for Iran. It is not clear to me if Trump actually saw the plan or just folded.

If DJT had a sense of military history he might be reminded of the movie line written for Japanese Admiral Yamamoto in the 70's Pearl Harbor movie "Tora, Tora, Tora":

"I fear all we have done is awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve."

VP Vance id that he "understands" how Iran might have had the wrong impression that the ceasefire extended to the Israelis attacks on Lebanon as well. Of course, the Pakistani negotiators said it was part of the deal. Personally, I think Israel is making every attempt to wreck the cease fire so they can continue to bomb Iran. We'll see.

I'll say that acceptance of Iran's plan is total victory for Iran. It is not clear to me if Trump actually saw the plan or just folded.

Or that isn't the plan that was agreed on as a basis to negotiate.

https://thehill.com/policy/international/5823074-t...

Then, with Trump’s 8 p.m. EDT deadline on Tuesday for the Iranian military to end its restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz “fast approaching,” the Iranian government “acknowledged reality” and “put forward a more reasonable” plan to the administration, Leavitt noted.

From there, the president and other U.S. officials “determined the new modified plan was a workable basis on which to negotiate and to align it with our own 15-point proposal,” she added.

No way to know if any party is telling the truth, but I suspect not.

It is abundantly clear to me that Israel is trying to "West Bank" Lebanon.

They have been very clear about their expansionist plan.
