That comment of Goldwater's blows my mind. I grew up in a household that considered him to be a threat to democracy because of his ultra-conservative convictions. So there was more sanity there than I had been able to recognize at the time. And now that those Christians who believe they are acting in the name of God have such a stranglehold on the Republican party, his fear has become reality.

By today's standards, Goldwater would be a moderate. In fact, I doubt he would have anything to do with the modern Republican Party. I may not have agreed with everything, but he could be reasoned with. As I recall, he was pro-choice because his wife was an OB, and he listened to her.
