People who read the boards want to know if there are new *recent* additional posts on the boards they use. Pick a time period (24/48/72 hrs?) and set a flag on each board when there is a new post. Could just display the last post NUMBER for each board or do a 2-number display: Number of posts on day X (fixed or variable--1st of month, 5th of month, etc OR the count from 1-2-3 days ago) AND the current number of posts. Then people can see if there are additional posts on each board they use without having to open each board and look. Less server use because people do NOT have to open boards with no activity.

Another way to sort-of show the post count CHANGE would be to display the last post number AND the date it was made. That way, people can determine if they want to view the board.
