" Would you believe that the number of U.S. stocks included in a leading total stock market index can hit an all-time low on the same day that the total value of those stocks hits an all-time high?

Well, you should believe it, because it’s true. In fact, it’s happened several times lately, most recently this past Monday.

At market close on Oct. 14, the FT Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index reached its highest value ever, $56.37 trillion, while the number of stocks in the Wilshire was down to 3,328. That’s the lowest number of stocks in the index since it was created in 1974."
