This updated S&P sector data presentation shows the YTD ,or selectable shorter time, for the S&P 500 stocks.
Berkshire is the largest beige bubble in the financial sector shown a couple % higher than the S&P dotted line YTD.
Place the cursor on the bubble to see the Co ticker.
Seeing NVDA, META, & LLY,as big YTD outperfomers was not surprising but that blue bubble at the top of the industrial sector at ~60% outperformance sure was.....GE!
Larry Culp was hired to turn GE around & sure looks good so far.

I see DG and DLTR are the two laggards in consumer staples. I decided to swear off retail. I can't evaluate these two, and the other darling, Carmax, while a bit more in my wheelhouse, just doesn't make sense to me. Why would anyone pay their prices? Folks do, obviously. I don't get it.

Adrian c,

Folks pay Carmax prices because they know that nobody can get a better deal than them at Carmax. It makes no logical sense, but the fear of not getting the absolute best price is extremely powerful in many people. I worked as a finance manager in a traditional dealership for a few years, and many customers made non optimal choices. They would come into the finance office with a dazed look on their face and make emotional choices more often than not. The fear of not being a good negotiator or the distaste of negotiations at all will lead people to pay extra for many services.

I'm not shilling for Carmax, but I bought a vehicle there for cash a while ago, liked the experience, and didn't feel ripped off.
Carmax is so big that they may have a specific vehicle that you're interested in on their local lot. If not, it's probably at a Carmax in a nearby state, and for a fairly reasonable fee they'll ship it to your local Carmax. They have an easy to navigate website to find vehicles. They have a reputation for not selling bad vehicles. They have a 10-day return policy on sold vehicles, and a 90day/4000mile limited warranty. The price they pay you for your vehicle, if you want to trade it in, isn't hugely lowball (they won't resell your vehicle if it doesn't meet their standards, IIRC they sell it to an auction). I did some due diligence and their prices weren't bad. All in all, I was happy with the transaction, but perhaps others haven't had a similar experience.

Those graphics are indeed cool. But I noticed that ^GSPC is in the Health Care sector. I wonder why, and if there are other, more subtle, mistakes. Not that it'd matter much, it's eye candy, and presumably anyone looking at those visuals would do some due diligence before acting.

It's worth poking around https://www.chartfleau.com/ a bit.
They do have some extremely nice graphics, e.g. for the yield curve etc.

Carmax, while a bit more in my wheelhouse, just doesn't make sense to me. Why would anyone pay their prices? Folks do, obviously. I don't get it.

Well, this is why:
1. Carmax is "easy". You search on their website, choose a car, go in a test drive it, and then buy it. No hassle, no haggle, really quick process. They will even ship the car to your nearest location (sometimes for a fee).
2. Carmax is generally fair. Yes, they sometimes have higher prices than others, definitely higher than private party, but still generally fair pricing.
3. There's carmax, autonation, sleazy dealers, and private party. Automation and Carmax are pretty much the same. Sleazy dealers will always try, and usually succeed, to rip you off one way or another. And private party is a huge pain and very time consuming.
4. Carmax trade ins, or just plain sales, are VERY quick and easy. Yes, they might pay a little less than others, but they pay right away with no hassle at all.

We've purchased 3 cars at Carmax, and sold 2 cars to carmax over the last 10 years or so. And we are almost entirely satisfied. The only other auto deals that beat their easy process is Tesla sales.

I sold an 8 year old Porsche to Carmax during Covid and couldn’t believe what they gave me. Great seamless experience
