Any advise on free anti-virus, malware and maintenance software that I can run on my PC to see if it is infected, tune up etc.

I use Avast (free version) for antivirus, and CCleaner (also free version) to maintenance.

CCleaner is very powerful. I use the default settings, but it can do a lot more. It cleans up cookies, registry errors, etc.
