King Donald has taken credit for the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil by ICE. Now, regardless of what you think of Khalil, either we are a country of laws backed by a Constitution or we are a dictatorship. While you may disagree with Khalil's politics, unless he has committed a crime by breaking a law, his arrest is unlawful. Organizing pro-Palestinian rallies at Columbia University is not a crime. And King Donald's executive order is not a law.

Khalil, who helped organize the school's pro-Palestinian rallies, was hauled away from his university-owned apartment Saturday night by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after he was told his student visa was being revoked, his attorney said in a statement. Attorney Amy Greer added that ICE was informed that Khalil is a permanent resident with a green card but "detained him anyway."

The arrest seems to be a result of Trump's push to deport international students who protested against the war in Gaza.

Trump and his administration did not provide any evidence of the allegations against Khalil or any other protesters.

Khalil's wife, who is a U.S. citizen and eight months pregnant, said ICE will not tell her where Khalil is being detained.

So how is it okay to "disappear" a legal resident?

“We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X in response to reports of Khalil’s detention.

Don't know whether to file this one under FAFO for the reported Muslim lack of support for Kamala ...
... or create a new file called schadislamfreude .

So how is it okay to "disappear" a legal resident?

It's not, but that's a somewhat different question than whether it is legal to do this to a lawful permanent resident (someone who holds a green card).

Green cards can be revoked under certain circumstances listed in the Immigration and Nationality Act. Among the various reasons you can be declared ineligible for your green card is if someone:

(VII) endorses or espouses terrorist activity or persuades others to endorse or espouse terrorist activity or support a terrorist organization;

This appears to be what they're basing Khalil's detention on. Hamas is a terrorist organization, so if Khalil has done something related to Hamas that meets the above description, he can have his LPR status revoked and be deported. The Administration is probably going to try and make that "support" term do a lot of heavy lifting here; expect an argument for a very expansive interpretation of what that term means.
