Both Trump and House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) have been open about their determination to roll back the ACA, also known as Obamacare, a policy advanced in Project 2025. In October 2024, Johnson told a crowd there would be “massive” changes to healthcare if voters reelected Trump. “We want to take a blowtorch to the regulatory state. These agencies have been weaponized against the people. It’s crushing the free market; it’s like a boot on the neck of job creators and entrepreneurs and risk takers. And so health care is one of the sectors, and we need this across the board,” he said.

Now, though, those hypothetical cuts are real, and without the extension of the premium tax credit, the cost of many Americans’ healthcare premiums will skyrocket.

As NPR’s Selena Simmons-Duffin pointed out on Saturday, about 24 million Americans who don’t have health insurance through their jobs or through Medicaid buy health insurance in the Affordable Care Act marketplace.

According to the nonpartisan health research organization KFF, without the extension of the tax credits, premiums will go up an average of 114% for consumers. Spiking premiums will mean the healthiest people decide to go without health insurance, sending prices up for everyone else.

Enrollment starts November 1, putting pressure on Congress to provide a fix before then.

In a partisan twist, more than three in four people enrolled in ACA plans live in states Trump won in 2024.

A KFF poll published October 3 shows that extending the premium tax credits is popular. Seventy-eight percent of Americans say they want Congress to extend the tax credits. That number includes 59% of Republicans and 57% of MAGA supporters.

Translations:

"waste, fraud, and abuse" is Reaganese for any program he doesn't like.

it’s like a boot on the neck of job creators and entrepreneurs and risk takers.

It's a "burden" on the "JCs", because the Proles are expendable meat.

The guy is telling you, to your face, the health and welfare of Proles are a cost to be minimized, while the "JCs" make a profit off Prole labor.

Well, the money is going to go SOMEWHERE. In fact, it already has—to provide seemingly endless funds to a masked and apparently unaccountable secret police force to terrorize the populace indiscriminately and build concentration camps.

Pretty sure most Americans would consider being able to go to a doctor a better use of our resources. I do.

Certainly, and don't forget the $20 Billion gift Trump is sending to Argentina, a country that has universal healthcare!

Those who are saying "the problem with healthcare is it is not free market enough", clearly don't understand math.

Seems to be the motivating impulse behind Trump’s inner circle supporters.

"Those who are saying "the problem with healthcare is it is not free market enough", clearly don't understand math."

They don't understand healthcare or free markets. Free market capitalism is about creative destruction. Leaving healthcare decisions up to the free market leads to situations where many lives are simply not worth saving because they are economically not worth it. It would lead to care being solely focused on the young and mostly healthy (who can still repay the costs) or the rich.

BMH Free money is popular. An amazing insight.

A bunch of your friends disagree with you, Simon Legree.

As Congress debates federal health care spending as part of spending bill negotiations, including extending the enhanced premium tax credits, the latest KFF Health Tracking Poll finds three-quarters (78%) of adults say Congress should extend the enhanced tax credits for people who buy their own insurance through the ACA Marketplace. This is more than three times the share of the public (22%) who say Congress should let the credits expire. Notably, majorities across political party want Congress to extend the tax credits including nine in ten (92%) Democrats, eight in ten (82%) independents, and six in ten (59%) Republicans. A majority of Republicans who align with the MAGA movement (57%) also say Congress should extend these subsidies.

Obamacare was a boon...for health insurance companies.

For individuals, not so much. The fact that people celebrate it is an indictment of the media and many other things.

I suspect you never had to deal with the individual health insurance market prior to the ACA. It was a nightmare. Our last application ran to 10's of pages. Miss a prescription you had 5 years ago? Insurance liable to being dropped.

The ACA has done nothing to keep healthcare costs down, I agree.

Obamacare was a boon...for health insurance companies.

Has anyone else noticed health insurance companies are flying, in the face of an end to the subsidies?

https://stockcharts.com/sc3/ui/?s=ELV

https://stockcharts.com/sc3/ui/?s=HUM

Maybe they are flying in anticipation of the "intrusive, burdensome, big gummit, regulations" becoming irrelevant as people are priced out of ACA plans?

Why, yes, but don't you think free money would be 100% popular?

10% of adults are on ACA, so an additional 68% of adults who aren't getting ACA think it should be extended. However, Simon Legree...

Nothing's 100% popular. And of course, free money will be more popular with the people who are receiving it - or who receive collateral benefits from it - than with those who don't.

than with those who don't.

Which is why the 68% that are not receiving it but want it extended is so meaningful. Only ~12% of the jobs in the USA are part pf Healthcare and medical insurance, and some care in areas will disappear, but there are a significant number of people (56%) who want it extended that have no significant benefit from it at all.

Only 22% are Simon Legrees.
