Following in Threaded mode, which shows as whole thread.
So when I want to recommend a post from an author, it seems to recommends every reply in the thread. Even if I might disagree with one or more replies by another author in the thread. That doesn't sound right to me, but still stumbling around a MUCH more familiar site so I could be overlooking somewhere?

As mentioned by another, I also expect to see more names from before the 'abomination'.

That would be crazy, I agree. However I rather sure it is okay, and just the other posts were already recommended by someone else. You can test by recommending one of the other posts, and it should move up +1 point if you had not recommended it before.
When viewing a post as 'Whole Thread (4)' the 'Recommend' links appear against each individual post. When you click 'Recommend' it only recommends that one single post that the link is next to.

Nothing in Settings, but still only praises for this site!
And answering myself for a different view, switched to UNthreaded and can rec individual authors that way... and get to the Favourites threshold level quicker.

Hmm.. looks like there's a bug lurking in those links when using 'Whole thread'. 'pid' on replies points to the first post in the thread. So you'll either get 'You cannot recommend a post more than once!' or unwittingly recommend the 'wrong' post.

Kudos to kitsapkidd and further meticulously identified by Raylight. Problem now solved. As Raylight found the recommend feature in 'Whole Tread (4)' mode wasn't recommending all posts, but just the top one, and now correctly recommends the corresponding mid-thread post. All done.
