Trump proposes slashing fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars

The standards proposed by the Trump administration would require cars to get about 34 miles to the gallon by 2031, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The oil industry group the American Petroleum Institute has lobbied the Trump administration to repeal the Biden fuel economy standards, contending that they aim to phase out liquid fuel vehicles.

According to the table in the Wiki article on the history of the CAFE reg, 34mpg, turns the clock back to 2014. Except, due to Bush #43's "reform" there is no requirement to actually build cars that deliver 34. The "reformed" standard sets the "target mileage" for each vehicle, based on it's footprint. That "reform" allowed automakers to stop building fuel efficient vehicles, because they no longer need economical models to pull their fleet average up. That has allowed Ford's Farley to not only exit the conventional passenger car market, but allow him to abandon the two row SUV segment as well. The fuel economy ratings for the 2026 Explorer, the smallest passenger vehicle that Farley wants to build, are 20 city/27 highway
