good article... hopefully not paywalled from Apple News

https://stocks.apple.com/AwPRNaHWWTOKauyA6Iegu5A

"Based on the innovative formula, Buffett gives away 5% less stock each year, but because Berkshire stock is up more than fivefold since the original pledge, the value of the annual donations has roughly doubled since 2006."

“The value of Berkshire shares will, of course, vary from year to year. And, as noted, the number of shares distributed will diminish by 5% a year. Nevertheless, I believe that you can reasonably expect the value of Berkshire shares to increase, in an irregular manner, by an amount that more than compensates for the decline in the number of shares that will be distributed.”

"At the time of his original 2006 donation, Buffett owned $43 billion of Berkshire stock, some 475,000 Class A shares. Since then, he has given away about $50 billion in Berkshire stock and still owned 216,637 Class A shares based on the latest proxy in March. That interest is now worth $133 billion."

I believe the $50bn is the sum of the market values at the time each was given. The shares he has given away are now valued at a little under $160bn. Had he not donated them, his shareholding would be worth a little over $291 billion, which would leave him the richest person by quite a margin. Just the ~$80bn gap to #2 would be enough to get another person into the top 20.
