This morning the NY Times Ethicist column (apparently an advice column for confused Leftists) really hit it out of the park in response to the question posed by today's letter writer.
Not because of the Ethicist's response--he usually doesn't make a lick of sense.
But because the letter writer precisely nailed everything that is completely wrong with progressiveism.
So, the letter writer evidently has a family of illegal immigrants living next to him, or has good reason to believe they are illegal immigrants. Being a good docile little liberal, of course that's perfectly fine and he would never dream of narcking them out to the authorities. So far, so good.
No, the juicy bit is the part where apparently the illegal familys' garage business closed down for some reason. So now they are running it out of their home and driveway and front yard. 15 cars at a time parked there, coming and going, and you can imagine how noisy and annoying it must be for the liberal neighbor who is the letter-writer.
A person with a functioning brain would report the neighbor, not for being illegal aliens, but for running an obviously illegal commercial business in a residential area. Probably all KINDs of code violations including environmental. (Gee do you think they have liability insurance and pay their employees on the books? Etc.)
But nope. That's too difficult for our guilty feeling little liberal letter writer.
His "ethical dilemma" is he is torn because if he reports the neighbor for the illegal garage, and he turns out to be illegal alien or his family members are, EVIL ICE may actually come after them and DEPORT them.
Therefore letter writer is paralyzed with guilt.
Again, a perfect example of the scrambled, enabling of evil and crime thought process of progressives.
The letter writer certainly never gave a hoot until the illegals moved in next door and escalated their scammy, grifty, illegal ways in a manner which had a personal impact. He had cognitive dissonance. He felt reporting the illegals for their bad conduct would make HIM a "bad person."
So, so stupid. So, so irrational.
Also, this totally gives the lie to the stupid liberal mantra that illegal aliens are "law abiding EXCEPT for being in the country illegally."
They are not. They are presumptively grifters who have no respect whatsoever for the laws of whatever country they find themselves in and will grift, cheat, and scam as much as they can get away with.
