I studied Philippine land law because foreigners cannot own land.
The Philippines is dicey. One of my wife's distant relatives has a piece of land. They finally decided to build on it, but there were squatters that had built a shack on one corner of the property. The squatters threatened the rightful owners if they tried to build, or tried to move them. The cops weren't interested until a "fee" was paid. Then they ran the squatters off (though, apparently, there is still some trepidation that the squatters might come back to exact revenge; though less likely since the cops got their "fee").
1poorlady occasionally mentions moving there because it is cheaper. But I don't think I could handle that sort of thing, and she's been in the US long enough I'm not sure she could either. She's still Filipina through-and-through, but a bit Americanized now. She doesn't just accept that you need to pay people off anymore.
