Hillary Clinton wasn’t the only one engaged in dirty tricks against then candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. An analysis released last week by the Central Intelligence Agency admits the intelligence community’s December 2016 assessment of Russian interference in the election was the product of political manipulation.

A fact known to every astute political observer, I'll note.

How high up did things go? All the way up:

Text messages exchanged by senior G-men implicate Mr. Obama in pre-election perfidy. In September 2016, then-FBI lawyer Lisa Page tasked then-counterintelligence chief Peter Strzok with drafting talking points about the Russia operation for Mr. Comey, because “potus wants to know everything we’re doing.” POTUS at the time referred to Mr. Obama.

Mr. Strzok also quoted an official whose identity remains redacted, saying, “the White House is running this.” After nearly a decade, there’s no reason to continue hiding relevant public records.

Nope. I've suspected there's a few reasons why Obama tends to be more Church Mouse than bombastic orator these days.

Modern historians like to say the third-rate burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972 was the greatest political scandal in American history. Watergate is nothing compared to a top-down conspiracy to deploy the assets of the intelligence community to manipulate the democratic process and undermine the result of an election.

Given the success of the 2016 chicanery, many of the same tactics were reused to sabotage Mr. Trump’s 2024 comeback bid, with far more serious consequences. Laws were changed to have the former president arrested on preposterous charges. Democratic elections officials even plotted to exclude him from the ballot, requiring Supreme Court intervention.

Absolute transparency is the only way to shame the malefactors involved, if only to dissuade others from such machinations in the future.
