The Federal Aviation Administration is closing the airspace around El Paso International Airport in Texas for 10 days, grounding all flights to and from the airport.

A notice posted on the FAA’s website said the temporary flight restrictions were for “special security reasons,” but did not provide additional details. The closure does not include Mexican airspace.

The airport said in an Instagram post that all flights to and from the airport would be grounded from late Tuesday through late on Feb. 20, including commercial, cargo and general aviation flights. It suggested travelers contact their airlines to get up-to-date flight information.


Sounds like Dean Wormer just put El Paso on double secret probation.

Charlotte Clymer posted about this with some information from an El Paso city council member.

El Paso City Councilmember Chris Canales wrote this from his Reddit account about four hours ago:

Hi y’all. This is real, but [no] reason at all to panic. We’re all trying to work out why this crazy NOTAM was issued by the FAA. What I know so far (as of 12:56 AM local time Wednesday):

• It isn’t a typo or an error. FAA issued this NOTAM intentionally as written.

• Nobody local got advance notice — neither civilian nor military leadership.

• Military does not have carte blanche exemption. Army seems to be fretting about their flights tomorrow just as much as everyone else.

• Local air traffic controllers didn’t get advance notice.

• Albuquerque Center (regional air traffic controllers) also did not get advance notice.

I’ll share more updates here as I’m able.

Supposedly, a Mexican cartel drone was in the area.

The Federal Aviation Administration abruptly grounded all flights in and out of El Paso International Airport in Texas for 10 days starting Wednesday morning, citing “special security” instructions, and then lifted the order hours later.

A Trump administration official said the Department of Defense disabled Mexican cartel drones that had breached U.S. airspace and that there was no threat to commercial air travel currently.
