Recently, the TMU began transmitting a repeating pattern of ones and zeros as if it were “stuck.” After ruling out other possibilities, the Voyager team determined that the source of the issue is the FDS. This past weekend the team tried to restart the FDS and return it to the state it was in before the issue began, but the spacecraft still isn’t returning useable data.

What a triumph that they were able to take advantage the slingshot alignment of the planets and that the probes have been maintained this long.

Voyage 1 is 46 years and counting. I think the original mission plan was for about 5 years. It completed its planetary missions in just over 3. Voyager 2 was similar, and they were able to add Neptune (not part of the original plan, as I recall).

NASA is really good at making things that far exceed their planned lives. Look at the Mars rovers, for example.
