Nah, don't worry about the rationality of Apple's capital allocation.

There's a pretty good chance a mere announcement will do the trick. Sometimes there is no need to actually DO anything, as long as the press articles achieve the result that the counterparties desire, which is in some cases just the press articles. Sometimes the obeisances is not needed, merely the show of obeisance.

Sometimes I muse about the practicality of having a low-volume production line for making iPhone domestically for the defense/spy industry. I read that a US-produced iPhones would cost $3,500 instead of $1,199. That's atrocious for a consumer, and would see Apple's business fall, but maybe it's reasonable for supplying the defense department.

I'm quite certain that was the case here. The core US complaints of non-tariff trade barriers weren't addressed at all. The promise to buy $250 million of US energy doesn't appear to be mathematically impossible. Even if it were, the EU commission has no authority or ability to allocate private capital. It is a promise they don't have the ability to keep. Surely the US negotiators knew that. Yet the EU managed to negotiate a better deal than our most important trading partner--Canada--and made no concessions that I'm aware of to get it, other than to sign off on the press release.

Correct! Those big beautiful Foxconn fabs in Wisconsin serve as a perfect example of the kind of obeisance required to get things done!!

0% tariff on US exports to the EU.

Reduce or eliminate Non-Tariff Barriers for U.S. Industrial Exports & Non-Tariff Barriers for U.S. Agriculture Exports

Seems like pretty significant concessions.

Precisely...Tim Cook presented Trump with a 24-karat gold gift and told him he is a very special boy!

Warren has been vocal regarding his criticisms of the tariffs.

As a large Apple shareholder, I suspect he admires how Tim handles the politicians.

Doesn't sound too significant to me. From perplexity.

Under the new EU–US agreement announced in July 2025, the main rules being relaxed concern some non-tariff barriers for U.S. food and agricultural exports. Specifically, both parties have committed to:
• Streamlining sanitary certificate requirements for U.S. pork and dairy products, meaning documentation and approval processes for these foods should become simpler and less burdensome for U.S. exporters.
• Easing entry for certain “non-sensitive” agricultural goods such as nuts, some processed fish, and pet food—these will benefit from lowered or zero tariffs, and in some cases, the EU will increase quotas (for instance, on U.S. bison meat).
• Maintaining EU food safety and environmental standards: However, sensitive sectors (for example, beef and other major meat products) will continue to face strict EU regulations and existing tariffs. There is no indication that core EU food safety standards—like bans on nonapproved chemicals, pesticides, or GMOs—will change.
• Commitment to further reduce non-tariff barriers in future: The agreement outlines an intention to continue working together to address longstanding issues with non-tariff barriers, but specific details beyond the above points are not finalized.
For now, the most immediate rule changes involve the process for sanitary certification and easier access for specific agricultural products, while most comprehensive EU standards on food safety remain intact. The final details, particularly a full list of products gaining relaxed access, are still being negotiated.

Tim is not the only one playing that game (make more news than results). It’s become SOP with everyone forced to respond to the criminal threats.
