A bit over a decade ago, they sold their consumer-facing brand, Tomcat, to Scotts Miracle-Gro
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/scottsmir..."In addition to research and development, Bell Laboratories, Inc. will continue to perform regulatory and manufacturing functions for the Tomcat brand."
At the time, I think that was reported as a $60m transaction. Not sure on that figure.

https://www.pctonline.com/news/bell-laboratories-a...Interesting that Warren traveled out to Wisconsin with Howie and Greg. Family owned private company, products sold in over 50 countries, #1 in a decidedly unsexy field. You can imagine them calling with a price and not offering it to anybody else.
This acquisition, while tiny, during the Artificial Intelligence boom reminds me of buying a brick company during the height of dot-com mania.

totally sorta OT but the Bell Labs ref triggered an old memory..
As a young USN vet. elec engineer grad from Marquette in the early 60's with a new family & college debt via Wisconsin's Joe McCarthy "Student Defense Loan" ( where I had to have a notarized signature that I was not a communist!), I was in debt & in search of a company that would pay for my graduate studies.
Bell Labs on the east coast had a Co-Op with Princeton, Hughes had the Hughes Fellowship program in LA, and several companies in the SF Bay Area (a.k.a. Silicon Valley now) were part of the Stanford Honors Program. I really wanted the Bell Labs program & the associated prestige but received and accepted an offer from a Silicon Valley company first . I later received a corresponding offer from Bell Labs but by that time the allure of Sunny California & it's Mt's & Beaches and great weather and Stanfords highly regarded graduate program so decided to "Go West Young Man, Go West".
....now as a Berkshire shareholder, I can say I am part owner of Bell Labs !
ciao

This info is way more important to brk than the deal itself. The GOAT is still active, kicking and closing deals

we get it.
deals that cannot possibly move the needle, and may not even be worth the time of those involved, are ok as long as one underpays.
a particular warren aspect is thriving alongside his 2014 cadillac...which he possibly used for the road trip.
