But an 11-hour train ride, mostly in the dark, versus a one-hour flight that typically costs less, even with an extra charge for bags? No contest.
If it was in the dark, we'd take a sleeper train. Board, go to bed, wake up the next day where we want to go. We did that from Salzburg to Firenze on our first European trip. Only problem was it arrived at 6 or 7am, and we couldn't check into lodging until around 10am. Those were the cobbles that destroyed the spinner, and prompted me to buy the bag with rollerblade wheels.
My thinking at the time was that much of the day would be consumed by transit, plus an extra hotel night, and that doing the sleeper train was comparable. Which it was, at the time.
