The high traffic was not settling down to earlier levels, so I solved it definitively today with programming (reducing per-request load different ways, allowing some robots but using sitemap to prevent them repeating routes) and some network traffic IP bindings.
The 429 response was not an 'error' but something we want and should be thankful for (a protection mechanism keeping the site largely up during the high traffic) so I had to identify the underlying multifaceted problems. The pressure was extra-useful actually because the site is now even faster, especially when reading in threaded mode with many posts loading at once.
