The world just became a smaller, less interesting place.
--------
From my remarks at my own retirement party almost six years ago:
"I have a few heroes – not very many – and most of them are sitting in this tent. One exception is a man named Charlie Munger, whose 94th birthday happens to be today. Charlie is an honest, brilliant man of few words but of superb common sense, honed by a life of reading, thinking, and learning.
"While in his thirties, Charlie founded what quickly became and still remains a very successful Los Angeles law practice, Munger, Tolles and Olson. Twenty years later, while in his early fifties, he left the practice of law. When asked why, he said that he didn’t set out to be rich – he set out to be independent. As usual, Charlie got it exactly right."
-------
Around 18-20 years ago, I sent him a note, basically a thank-you. I mentioned how I had modeled some of the structure of my own practice after that he'd pioneered at MTO.
A week or so later, I received a scrawl: "You sound like my kind of fellow". (While generally not much of a pack rat, I still have the note)

I am regrettably late to the BRK universe and while I've spent much time looking and listening at wisdom from Munger and Buffett...I hardly know enough to write properly.
Other than to say, I am so sorry.
Man it's like an era ending.

Bill Gates -
Charlie Munger had a remarkable mind and was a guiding influence for countless people, including me. His partnership with Warren Buffett didn’t just shape Berkshire Hathaway—it reshaped the world’s understanding of business and investing. Despite the hardships he endured in his 99 years, Charlie maintained a sharp sense of humor and an even sharper moral compass that everyone could learn from. The world has lost an extraordinary individual, and I have lost a friend. I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with him.

He is now among the eminent dead he so many times advised us to make friends with.

Damn Sad!
(But a lot can be learned from the eminent dead.)

As I've gotten older I've learned that it is painful both physically and emotionally. The longer you live, the more family, friends, heroes and people you admire, you end up watching them pass on. 99 is a long time to live but it doesn't make it any easier on family and friends. The only real "hero" type person I ever had was in sports and growing up when I did, it was Brooks Robinson. Sadly he recently (mid summer) passed away as well and it still hit me hard despite being near 60.
RIP Charlie.

Every tragedy has its large parts and small parts.
I have little to add to the larger loss.
A small part: I understand that Mr Munger had already booked the venue for his 100th birthday.
But he was a canny man with his finances...I'm sure he negotiated a fully refundable deposit.
With interest.

The story of Betty White was not lost on Charlie?

The story of Betty White was not lost on Charlie?
Or the reverse, George Burns.
Personally I'm hoping Mr Buffett follows the example of Irving Kahn. I believe he was still working managing investments at 109.
