What happens if you increase the cost of inputs, destroy export partnerships, and start rounding up your workforce and shipping them off to concentration camps?
The US has lost more than 78,000 manufacturing jobs this year alone.
The economy was in a good place in late 2024. That's no longer true. And the trajectory is, at a minimum, concerning.
That's millions of peoples lives, and millions of stories of pain.

U.S. job growth continued to slow down in August, a sign that the labor market is deteriorating markedly.
The government also revised its numbers from earlier in the summer, and said that the economy lost a net 13,000 jobs in June. It was the first such decline since December 2020.
The U.S. added 22,000 jobs in August, the Labor Department reported Friday, below the gain of 75,000 jobs economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected to see.
The unemployment rate, which is based on a separate survey from the jobs figures, was 4.3%, up slightly from 4.2% in July.
Private-sector employment grew by 38,000 jobs, driven by a gain of 46,800 jobs in healthcare and social assistance. Federal government employment declined 15,000 jobs in August.Hmm, let's think - who was the POTUS the last time the labor market did as poorly as it did in the sentence that I bolded?

I think it was on the METaR board, here, that I posted a summation of a point of view I saw offered on the Yahoo Finance channel, a week or so ago: that "JCs" were going to "create" fewer jobs going forward, because, between boomers retiring, mass deportations, closed border, work visa denials, and the government looking for excuses to deport people already here on visas, the "JCs" know there is no-one to fill more jobs, if they were created, so "creating" more jobs, would be pointless.
If she is right, then lower job "creation" will not result in higher unemployment.
Lots of interesting graphs in this piece from bubblevion's site. Especially the graph of the unemployment rate. While headlines today are screaming "unemployment up", look at the graph. Unemployment has essentially flatlined, over the past year. Today's print for August is 4.3%. The print for July of last year was 4.3%

Finally, Trump is going to get the rate cut he has been asking for. He had to make the economy bad enough for that to happen:-(

Now THAT’S a long sentence. 😁
While the rate of growth of US population is slowing, it’s still growing.
Creating fewer jobs, intentionally or not, portends of a slowing economy.
Slowing economy increases unemployment.
Tariffs increases prices.
Stagflation.

Now THAT’S a long sentence. 😁I endeavor to amuse. :^)
While the rate of growth of US population is slowing, it’s still growing. The number that matters is people in the labor force.
1.2 million immigrants are gone from the U.S. workforce under Trump, preliminary data showshttps://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/1-2-million-im...No sense creating jobs that you can't fill. Hence, the move in the US to forced labor, like the Medicaid work requirement, to force people to work/work more hours, to keep their Medicaid coverage. Michigan tried a Medicaid work requirement a few years ago. Sponsors of the bill said it was all about forcing people to take jobs that "JCs" complained they could not fill. A County Sheriff in metro Detroit just proposed another forced labor program, as an alternative to putting certain people in jail.

Interesting article thanks for posting.
This stood out for me...
"A broader measure of unemployment that includes discouraged workers and those holding part-time jobs for economic reasons climbed to 8.1%...the highest level since October 2021."

I agree.
1.2 million immigrants are gone from the U.S. workforce under Trump, preliminary data shows
This is what concerns me as it relates to the impact it has the economy.
The vast majority of these undocumented immigrants were working. The jobs didn’t go away, the labor force went away. The jobs are still there, they just can’t get filled (so why advertise for them?).
And the impact is broader than just having jobs with no labor force available. Being on the lowest rungs pay wise, most of these undocumented immigrants (after withholding taxes) spent 100% of their pay in the United States.
The jobs most undocumented immigrants had weren’t glamorous, but that doesn’t mean they were unimportant. They picked the food we ate, built homes, worked in construction, and much more.
The jobs will remain unfilled and they aren’t spending their money here in the U.S.
This will have a negative impact on our economy.
Ideally, we should have better control on who comes into our country. Immigration should be handled in a humane manner (I’m embarrassed I have to even mention this). And we should have a path to citizenship for those that work and obey the law. It’s in our DNA.
I know, they say I’m a dreamer.

"A broader measure of unemployment that includes discouraged workers and those holding part-time jobs for economic reasons climbed to 8.1%...the highest level since October 2021." The media loves to overdramatize everything. Technically, they are correct, but U6 was 8.0 only last February. Go back to the mid teens, U6 was much higher. U6 was much higher in the mid 90s too.
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?id=UNRATE,U6RAT...The trend going forward will be interesting, because the new variable is the extent that deportations, closed border, and denied/revoked visas impact the size of the labor force.

Being on the lowest rungs pay wise, most of these undocumented immigrants (after withholding taxes) spent 100% of their pay in the United States.Hence the increased focus on forced labor, and child labor. Some months ago, a state, I forget which one, significantly expanded the sort of jobs minors could work, and increased the hours per week they could be worked. The Medicaid work requirement is forced labor. A county prosecutor here in metro Detroit has proposed another forced labor scheme.
Macomb County prosecutor proposes Michigan’s first child support specialty court
Lucido said the specialty court would offer an alternative. Parents could plead guilty, but sentencing would be delayed while they complete a one-year program requiring payments, employment, and court oversight. Successful participants could avoid a felony record altogether.https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2025/09/...The use of prison labor could be expanded. A friend of mine has worked as a bull on a chain gang. Need farm labor? Empty out the county jail. 21st century technology would make keeping them under control a lot easier than in the scenes in "Cool Hand Luke". I'm thinking an ankle bracelet, that, if farther than 100 yards from the bull holding the transmitter, emits a homing signal, as it delivers high voltage shocks to the person wearing it.
