This only confirms what my late wife and I learned during our visit to Omaha for the 2000 annual meeting.

We had dinner at Gorat's, during which I enjoyed a brief conversation with Mr. Buffett (me leaving the restroom, he on his way in).

Me: "Mr. Buffett."

Mr. Buffett: "Good to see you."

Later, as we lingered outside the restaurant in the soft spring evening (delicious stuff for a couple of Alaskans still thawing out), an SUV pulled up to the entrance. This was noticed by two teenaged skateboarders we had been watching. The restaurant door opened, and the man himself emerged. One of the daredevils lifted his head and nodded to his pal:

Skateboarder One: "That's Warren Buffett."

Skateboarder Two: "Dude's got some dough."

Your story reminded me of an amusing exchange I overhead between a young couple and a hotel receptionist while checking in at a hotel before the annual meeting. With excited shareholders buzzing about the hotel lobby, the young fellow asked the clerk why Omaha was so busy. The receptionist replied that it was the Warren Buffett meeting. The puzzled young fellow asked, “Who’s Warren Buffett?” The receptionist replied, “Oh, you know. He’s like Elvis, only bigger!” ;-)

Really impressive that Warren had about $877,551,020 in wealth outside of his Berkshire shares in 2006.

On his salary!? Amazing. It would be so enlightening to see a breakdown of the holdings and trading history. What an epic story that would tell!

>>Really impressive that Warren had about $877,551,020 in wealth outside of his Berkshire shares in 2006.<<<

He used to reference his "personal account" (haven't heard him reference in recent years--but I may have missed) and it was, many years ago, presumed to be just a few million bucks.

People wonder --what would Buffett earn if he invested a small portfolio. Well, Warren's fun money is likely a couple $Billion or more...assuming $877 Million 19 years ago. And I'm assuming a rather miniscule start point.

Many years back, he talked about investing in Korean stocks. His broker had given him an almanac of Korean stocks. He invested in several stocks selling at single digit PEs.

He has also avoided investing in US stocks to avoid conflict with Berkshire’s portfolio. Remember Sokol?

good morning genius, nice to see you old bud. Some of us might be thinking, other than jpm, what else did Buffett own in his personal accounts that prevented him from putting his best ideas inside brk?

See how you get love in brkville pal, by asking substantive questions. Just in case any current brk insiders are reading this board, I would give Buffett's favorite charity 5 k in bitcoin, to do a one-hour Q and A with me via Zoom etc. You already know what I would ask, OR, I would be happy to provide the questions in advance, no got ya questions from me, I love and respect the guy. Thank you. Let's SHOCK THE Financial WORLD and do this!

True, yes. There's also a huge universe of US stocks that aren't large enough for Berkshire to invest in.

So Warren could for years buy stocks he'd buy as a private investor but he could not buy for Berkshire. Ironically the potential for conflict arose when he hired Todd and Ted who waded in any market cap they chose--with much smaller portfolios. Throw in your excellent point about Sokol and even the HINT of impropriety....

My guess is-his personal account has likely been pretty inactive for several years-and compounding like crazy :)

The one holding we know, jpm, indicates he may hold stocks that aren't liquid enough for brk. It's always a beautiful in brkville.

If I recall correctly, some years back he said there were only two stocks. He has never been a big fan of diversification.

Unfortunately for Warren, we also know one of his personal holdings was SRG (Seritage) common stock. He was still willing to do a secured first mortgage on all of their property at the Berkshire level, despite the potential conflict. He may have sold his SRG common before Berkshire made that loan. Seritage has been dutifully paying it off and the loan is almost finished. It was always well secured by 1st position mortgage on the real estate. Seritage issues a press release every time they mail Berkshire a principal repayment check.

He has said publicly that his 2010 adjusted gross income was around $62 million and his 2015 return showed $11.5m adjusted gross income. I think his non-Berkshire net worth has been between $600m and $850m for many, many years and he had many private investments not associated with Berkshire. The 2013 Annual Letter described a property investment in real estate adjacent to NYU, in partnership with Larry Silverstein and his friend Fred Rose.

Earlier in life he "subscribed" to quite a few annual reports by buying 100 shares each in companies he wanted to follow. With many decades of splits and the American tailwind you could imagine those "subscribe to the annual report mailing list" shares could be worth a good amount.

I suspect most of his $750m or so of liquid folding cash is probably in T-bills these days - it isn't worth the conflict.

Does anybody remember if Mid-Continent Tab Card Co. was a personal investment for him?

Actually I forgot about the ProPublica leak - Warren reported income of $125 million for the period 2013-2018 inclusive. He paid $24m of personal income tax (I assume this is federal only) according to that leak.

Your post would only make sense if We didn't already have the giving pledge and /or Gates was still on the board.
