So, none of the eight non-republican Senators who voted for the Thune deal are up for reelection in 2026, and two have said they are retiring from the Senate.
So, what was in it for them to vote contrary to the bulk of their party? It seems nothing. Which means it looks like they sincerely believe that it's the best thing for their constituents. I can't hate them for that.

It was, and is, the best thing for the country. Obviously. The Schumer shutdown was completely pointless. All it did was waste 40+days in which (had the CR been passed originally) they could have had real negotiations over ACA premium credits, health care, and whatever other policy issues Dems were concerned about.

Or, Schumer explained to his insurance company paymasters that the fight was unwinnable. Then he fingered enough Senators who had nothing to lose, to vote with the GOP, to end the collateral damage, while he still puffs himself up as a "defender of the people".
Angus King (independent) was on Amanpour last night. He was explaining they caved, because the GOP was not budging. He doesn't get it. The GOP was never going to budge. Trump doesn't care if Proles have health insurance, or food, or an education. Proles are expendable meat. He wants that money for himself and his cronies.
The health insurance companies that were whacked yesterday, are recovering a bit today. They can't possibly think there will be an extension of the subsidies, ever?

I don't think Schumer has that much power. That's why he needs to either retire with what's left of his dignity, or be primaried.
