Congrats to Mike Johnson for securing the Speaker’s position in one round of voting. Although, to be fair, Republican spines have long been missing after years of supplication to their God, Donelon Muskump.
Then, with all the heartfelt (does he even have a heart?) religiousness and fake piousness he could muster, Johnson jumped the shark.
Now, in Johnson’s behalf, he probably actually believed the unfounded story about prayer that Thomas Jefferson, brilliant founding father and slave owner, allegedly repeated every day of his eight year presidency and every day until his death.
Kind of pathetic that he didn’t ask a staff member to Google for 60 seconds (I guess he’s too busy trying to figure out how to get more tax breaks for multi-billionaires) to find out that the story is a crock of cow manure.
But according to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, there's no evidence to support the nation's third president ever recited the prayer.
"We have no evidence that this prayer was written or delivered by Thomas Jefferson. It appears in the 1928 United States Book of Common Prayer, and was first suggested for inclusion in a report published in 1919," the foundation said on its Monticello website.Such is the sad state of the Republican Party. We don’t need no stinking facts when we can make them up ourselves!
