So, Mamdani won the first round of ranked choice voting for the democratic mayoral candidate in NYC. No one got more than 50% of the vote, so subsequent rounds of voting must be performed.

Why isn't the final result immediately known, instead of it seemingly needing weeks to go through the rounds. Aren't the ballots already cast and every voter's ranked choice votes already known?
