Because the Biden administration launched its Cancer Moonshot, a multimillion effort to halve cancer deaths by 2047, Mad King Donald just had to kill it... and with it sentence thousands of cancer patients to an early death.
Over the past five years, more than 100 new cancer drugs were approved by the FDA and 99.4% of FDA-approved drugs between 2010 and 2019 were derived from NIH-funded research.
Along came Mad King Donald and $420 million of funding was cut from congressionally directed cancer research programs, including $368 million cut from CDC cancer research.
And over 240 cancer-related NIH grants have been terminated so far, grants which still have some $355 million in funds remaining in those grants.
Mad King Donald held up $1.5 billion in funding, effectively halting clinical trials of new drugs and laid off thousands of employees at the FDA, the NIH, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Grant Watch volunteers have started tracking "frozen" grants -- funding that hasn't been officially terminated but that researchers are unable to access.
Although a small percentage of these grants and programs may eventually be reinstated, court orders cannot reinstate months of lost treatment for cancer patients or researchers.
And in addition to gleefully playing the part of the Grim Reaper, intentionally killing Americans for no Goddamn good reason at all, Trump is a pedophile.
Since we saw Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit about ten days ago, this seems apropos:
"Elephant"
She said “Andy, you're better than your past”
Winked at me and drained her glass
Cross-legged on a barstool, like nobody sits anymore
She said “Andy you're taking me home”
But I knew she planned to sleep alone
I'd carry her to bed, sweep up the hair from her floor
If I'd fucked her before she got sick I'd never hear the end of it
She don't have the spirit for that now
We just drink our drinks and laugh out loud
And bitch about the weekend crowd
And try to ignore the elephant somehow
Somehow
She said “Andy, you crack me up”
Seagrams in a coffee cup
Sharecropper eyes, and the hair almost all gone
When she was drunk, she made cancer jokes
Made up her own doctors' notes
Surrounded by her family, I saw that she was dying alone
But I'd sing her classic country songs and she'd get high and sing along
She don't have a voice to sing with now
We burn these joints in effigy and cry about what we used to be
And try to ignore the elephant somehow, somehow
I've buried her a thousand times, given up my place in line
But I don't give a damn about that now
There's one thing that's real clear to me: No one dies with dignity
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow
Somehow
Somehow
