wrt cars, in 74, GM and Ford had more fuel efficient offerings, like the Pinto and Vega. So, when people ran away from the typical V8 "family sedan", the Chevy and Ford stores still had something to sell them. Now, Ford, in particular, in it's aggressive pursuit of escalating ATP and GP has discontinued it's more fuel efficient offerings. There is limited additional capacity at the Mexican plant that builds the Bronco Sport and Maverick. The large Bronco is a bit rough around the edges. That means, someone shopping for a non-pickup, from Ford, will be looking at an Explorer (20mpg city/29 highway, or worse, depending on powertrain). GM's small CUVs are imported from Korea, and hobbled by a 15% tariff.

laff break. In 74, automakers were making outlandish fuel efficiency claims about their models, until the government stepped in and demanded automakers quote the EPA measured fuel efficiency.

VW, back when it had a sense of humor, released this ad, pushing back at other company's mileage claims.
